Planets Collision Simulation

🪐 Explore the animation & Blender source

This animation was created in Blender 2.8. It features a collision simulation involving two spheres with textures.

Simulation & Modifiers

I utilized Blender's particle system for particle emissions, combined with the Explode Modifier to break the mesh apart upon impact. To guide the debris outward and create the shockwave effect, I used a hidden Torus mesh with a Collision Modifier.

For the planetary surfaces, I applied Subdivision Surface for smoothness and Displacement to create geometric depth from the textures.

Environment & Composition

To place the event in the vastness of space, I used a starry background image found on the internet. The animation of the planets approaching each other was achieved using keyframes, while the physics simulation required baking the particle cache to ensure the explosion and debris scattering played back smoothly during the final render.

Credits & Inspiration

The animation was achieved thanks to the help of this video by tutor4u. This was my first exposure to physics simulations in Blender and it gave me a foundation for my future works onwards.
